Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced Richard Boulware will be nominated by President Obama to serve as a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada. Reid recommended Boulware to President Obama for this judicial vacancy.
“This is terrific news for Nevada,” said Senator Reid. “Richard Boulware is the epitome of what a federal judge should be. He will bring to the bench stellar educational credentials and significant jury trial experience, having served many years as a federal public defender. A Nevada native, Boulware has been a leader in the community and actively involved in making Las Vegas a better place. I was proud to give Boulware my highest recommendation to President Obama, and I look forward to his swift confirmation.”
Richard Boulware is originally from Las Vegas, Nevada. If confirmed, he would be the first African-American man to serve on the U.S. District Court in Nevada. He received his Juris Doctor in 2002 from Columbia Law School, where he was on the Columbia Law Review. He received his bachelor’s degree Cum Laude from Harvard in 1993. Before joining the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Las Vegas in 2007, Boulware was a law clerk in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and a trial attorney for the Federal Defenders of New York from 2003-2007. Boulware has significant jury trial experience in federal court, and currently specializes in large and complex white collar criminal cases. He has also practiced before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Boulware is a past president of the Las Vegas chapter of the National Bar Association, as well as a former First Vice President of the Las Vegas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He received the Medal of Justice award from the State Bar of Nevada in 2012. He received the Dedicated Service award in 2013 from Nevada Attorneys for Criminal Justice. He serves as a board member of the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association Foundation, a charitable foundation that provides scholarships, sponsors free legal community events, and engages in other charitable activities to support the diversity of the local legal community and equal access to legal advice. He has also served on the Clark County School District Superintendent’s Educational Opportunities Advisory Committee, where he helped formulate recommendations for improving academic performance at underachieving schools in the district.
