This case is highly publicized for multiple reasons. For one, Chasing Horse is very well recognized as a result of portraying the character Smiles A Lot in “Dances with Wolves,” a very popular 1990 movie. For another, Chasing Horse’s trial date has been consistently stalled and prolonged after his legal team has exhausted all attempts at challenging the charges.

At one point, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that Chasing Horse’s original indictment needed to be dismissed. About a month after that, he was re-indicted after the charges were refiled.

Prosecutors allege that Chasing Horse used his fame from starring in the movie to mislead Indigenous tribes into thinking he was a real healer and medicine man. His fame and notoriety reportedly gave him access to vulnerable women and girls for decades, and he allegedly took advantage of his position to abuse some of these individuals.

Chasing Horse’s crimes are so serious that he’s facing over 21 felonies including sexual assault, sexual abuse, kidnapping, human trafficking, and producing videos of child sexual abuse. According to reports, Chasing Horse was banished from Fort Peck Indian Reservation back in 2015 after he was accused by tribal courts of human trafficking in the reserve. Evidence also emerged recently when video footage was discovered in a locked safe inside of a North Las Vegas residence.

This footage reportedly shows Chasing Horse sexually abusing a girl who is under 14 years old. Most disturbingly, this young girl became the suspect’s “wife” and is now an adult. The supposed victim has not talked to the police about her thoughts on what’s happened.

One witness has come forward saying that Chasing Horse assaulted her when she was 14 years old. She claims that the suspect told her he could help cure his mother’s cancer, but later sexually assaulted her. She told authorities that Chasing Horse told her the spirits wanted him to assault her in exchange for helping her mom. He also gave her an unknown pill after her first assault. She later also became his “wife” where she was further abused.

Have You Been Accused of a Sex Crime in Las Vegas?

If you get accused of committing a sexual-related crime, then you’ll want a legal advocate by your side who’s willing to fight for you as hard as Chasing Horse’s legal team is fighting for him. Sexual crimes are taken extremely seriously. If you’re convicted, then you’ll not only have to face the criminal penalties of the crime, but you’ll also likely need to be placed on a sexual offender registry once you’re released. This registry is public information. You will be restricted in where you can live, congregate, and work.
