A registered serial sexual offender has been charged with sex trafficking in Las Vegas, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal, after he attempted to start a prostitute ring. The suspect was arrested after two women reported his attempts to the police on August 5th at the Travelodge on Las Vegas Blvd South.
After the women said no, he reportedly tried to get them to drink a bottle of Hennessy, which they thought might have been drugged.
In 2014, the suspect was charged with kidnapping after luring two teen boys into his car, asking them if they wanted to be on a television show, and his rap sheet also shows a myriad of other crimes in Washington and Louisiana, including attempted commercial sexual abuse of a minor as well as narcotics charges.
While Nevada may be one of the more “open” states in the nation when it comes to prostitution and sex work, being one of the only places where you can legally enter a brothel in the US, there are still laws that bind those who operate in the adult communities, and this particular offender showed no qualms in breaking those, both in the past and more recently.
According to state law, sex trafficking in Nevada is defined as any person who knowingly “induces, causes, recruits, harbors, transports, provides, obtains or maintains” someone against their will to engage in prostitution. Oftentimes, sex trafficking will be followed closely by violence or drugging someone against their will in order to coerce them to stay a part of the human trafficking ecosystem.
The penalties for sex trafficking vary be severity. If those trafficked were adults, the felony charge holds about 1-6 years in prison, but if those trafficked were under the age of 18, they will face prison for 3-10 years maximum.
