On January 1, 2025, the nation was shocked when a Tesla Cyber Truck laced with explosives and fireworks exploded right outside of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. The incident wasn’t an accident, as the perpetrator fatally shot himself just prior to the detonation.
The explosion caused minor injuries to seven people. The Trump Hotel was not damaged. Investigators looking into the incident promptly identified the culprit as 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, a former highly decorated Green Beret.
Right now, investigators are still working to determine what made the former soldier commit this unexpected act of violence. Police have said that the suspect left notes saying the explosion should be a “wake up call” for the nation’s troubles. While assumptions could be made about the Tesla truck and the Trump Hotel, detectives aren’t sure if the suspect’s motives were political or not. In fact, the note the suspect left for stated that the country should rally around President-elect Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Law enforcement officials can only assume that the suspect meant no ill will towards the future president.
What investigators do know is that Livelsberger stopped on his way to Las Vegas to intentionally pour racing-grade fuel into the Cyber Truck. Then, he placed about 60 pounds of pyrotechnic material throughout the interior, too. When the suspect later discharged his weapon, it likely set off the explosion.
Police also determined that the suspect may have used AI to plan out this incident. Investigators are reviewing chatlogs from ChatGPT to determine artificial intelligence’s role in the incident. So far, it’s been revealed that the suspect used the service to learn more about explosives, how to detonate them with a gunshot, and where to buy guns and explosives.
The suspect was formerly a highly respected Green Beret. During his active duty, he was awarded five Bronze Stars, one for courage under fire and another for an Army Commendation Medal.
One very crucial piece of information that has been revealed during investigations is that Livelsberger had a shift in behavior and attitude in 2019 after he suffered a traumatic brain injury. He also likely had post-traumatic stress disorder.
Are you concerned about a former veteran that you know who may be experiencing symptoms related to PTSD or a TBI? Both of these conditions can increase aggression, decrease a person’s ability to think logically and heighten emotional responses to events. Unfortunately, these conditions are both risk factors that could increase a person’s likelihood of committing a crime or getting accused of committing a crime.
Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and everyone who is accused of criminal activity has the right to hire a lawyer. If you or someone you love needs legal representation in Las Vegas, we can help.
